Police Accountability Board Review

It might not be widely known in the UCD community that a campus Police Accountability Board (PAB) was established at UCD in 2014 to investigate complaints concerning campus police.

We attach a work in progress reviewing the functioning of the UCD PAB prepared by the DFA Board, led by Don Palmer. Note the report is an empirical investigation of the complaint investigation and evaluation process at UCD, not an ideological critique of it. Also it focuses specifically on the complaint investigation and evaluation process at UCD, not policing at UCD more generally.

We feel a better understanding, and possible refinement of PAB procedures might be a useful way forwards in ensuring the safe and just policing of our community. The DFA Board plans to use this report to initiate a broader campus discussion/virtual meeting concerning these issues in the coming quarter, including sharing it with the Chancellor’s committee on campus policing.
