Update: A few hours after we sent the below letter, we got a response that Chancellor May has signed on to the public statement authored by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU), and that his name should appear on the letter on their website sometime tomorrow.
Dear Chancellor May,
As representatives of the UC Davis faculty, we write to urge you to add your name to the American Association of Colleges and Universities’ (AACU) recently published statement, A Call for Constructive Engagement.
The AACU, of which UC Davis is a member, has issued this important statement emphasizing the need to oppose undue government intrusion in the lives of those who learn, live, and work on our campuses. As of 5:00 PM (ET) today, your name has not yet been listed among the signatories.
We respectfully call on you to sign on to this statement and join other campus leaders in affirming the principles outlined by the AACU. Your leadership in this matter would further demonstrate UC Davis’s dedication to freedom of speech, the principles of academic freedom, the pursuit of truth, and in opposition to retribution, censorship, and threats of deportation and defunding.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
The Executive Board of The Davis Faculty Association
