Update on DFA/CUCFA efforts to protest increase in healthcare plan costs

Dear DFA members,

I am writing to bring you up to date on the most recent developments related to our efforts to protest the dramatic increases in health care plan costs introduced in last November’s Open Enrollment. As you know, the Davis Faculty Association is a member of the Council of University of California Faculty Association (CUCFA), which meets regularly with the UC Union Coalition. On January 29th, CUCFA signed on to a UC Union Coalition follow-up letter addressed to Matt Teaford, Director of Labor Relations, University of California. The letter, which was copied to Members of the UC Board of Regents, UC President Michael Drake, and Melissa Matella, Associate Vice President Employee & Labor Relations articulated three demands:

1. UC should stop unilaterally passing on healthcare plan cost increases to employees.

2. Unions [including CUCFA] must be involved in future healthcare plan negotiations.

3. UC must be transparent about future negotiations between the University and its own health systems to prevent self-dealing.

Thank you,
Don Palmer,
DFA Chair
